Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Gupteshwar Pandey is in the news these days in the case of the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. In the Sushant case, the outspoken Gupteshwar Pandey is not only vocal in the media, but he is also involved in social media. Very few people will know about Gupteshwar Pandey, a 1987 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, that at one time he had taken Premature Retirement (VRS).
Gupteshwar Pandey took a premature retirement from the job to contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2009. Gupteshwar Pandey wanted to contest from Buxar Lok Sabha seat in 2009 on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. He also hoped that he would get a ticket from the BJP. With the intention of contesting elections, he had taken retirement from his job ahead of time in March, so that he could jump into the election summer.

Gupteshwar Pandey was hopeful that BJP could cut the ticket of then MP Lalmuni Chaubey from Buxar Lok Sabha constituency. Pandey was also expected to get the ticket, but it did not happen. Actually, in view of the possibility of ticket being cut, Lalmuni Choubey adopted a rebellious attitude and the BJP had to field them to calm the rebellion.

After Lalmuni Chaubey’s landing in Buxar in the election summer, Gupteshwar Pandey neither lived nor lived. Pandey had taken a break from his job ahead of time and the dream of contesting elections could not be fulfilled. In December 2009, Gupteshwar Pandey applied to the Bihar government that he would like to withdraw his resignation and return to service again.

The Nitish government approved Pandey’s application and reinstated his service. Before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Gupteshwar Pandey was made the DGP of Bihar Police. Significantly, Bihar cadre IPS officer Gupteshwar Pandey has been a high profile police officer and has also been posted as Superintendent of Police in several Naxalite affected districts. He was also the DIG of Munger and Muzaffarpur Zone. Later Pandey became the IG of Muzaffarpur zone and also remained the DG of Bihar Police (Training) before becoming DGP.
