The government has decided that while registering all their new products on the government e-marketplace (GeM), it will be mandatory to give information about the country of origin i.e. ‘Country of Origin’. It will be able to know where the goods belong to. The government has taken this step towards promoting self reliant India and Make in India.

E-Marketplace platform GEM makes country of origin mandatory to promote Atmanirbhar Bharat

According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, sellers who have uploaded their products before the introduction of this new feature on GeM will also have to update the ‘Country of Origin’. If they do not do so, then their products will be removed from GeM.

The percentage of local content must also be shown GeM has also made a provision to indicate the percentage of local content in the products. Apart from this, ‘Make in India’ filter has now been enabled on the portal. If buyers need Indian goods then they will see only those goods which are manufactured in India. The buyer will be able to purchase only those products which meet the criteria of at least 50 per cent local content.

This decision of the government has been welcomed by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAT). Traders say that this is a big step towards the success of the call for a vocal and self reliant India at the local level. CAT National President BC Bhartia and National General Secretary Praveen Khandelwal termed this move of the Central Government as a very commendable initiative and said that such a provision should be strictly and compulsively implemented on all ecommerce platforms doing business in the country.

Provision to write down the percentage of local content in products is also a very important step. It will tell those who buy goods, what percentage of Indian goods are used in the goods they are buying.
