Dr. V. Shanta (94 years), a well-known figure in the field of cancer treatment, died in Chennai. He has been a notable contributor to bringing cancer treatment to the reach of common man. Born on March 11, 1927, Shanta has two Nobel laureates in her family. CV Raman was his grandfather and S.K. Chandrasekhar Uncle. Shanta himself was honored with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padmavibhushan. He also received the Ramon Magsaysay Award. He did his MBBS from Madras Medical College in the year 1948 and then MD in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Later she joined Dr. Muthoolakshmi Reddy’s Cancer Institute and devoted the rest of her life to this field. She was serving the general public for 65 years living in the college campus.
